History Of Soccer In The US

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Although soccer is not THE sport in the US, the history of soccer in US is one of the longest around, right next to that of the English or the Scottish.

After the English set out to form a set of rules for the game of soccer, these were soon taken to the new World, where Americans learned to love this rising sport, right next to another game that grew strong roots in the US back then: baseball. Actually, the American Football Association is the second oldest sports league in America, after the Major League Baseball one.

Obviously, the history of soccer in US didn’t start with a professional league though (in terms of what we call professional today). The American Football Association, started out in 1884, was a semi-professional competition involving New England and some Midwest areas and it was a rather chaotic environment to play soccer in, but nevertheless it was there and progressing with each year.

A parallel soccer organization, the American Amateur Football Association was founded around the same time and the two coexisted until 1913, when they merged into the US Football Association, the first fully professional soccer organization throughout the history of soccer in the US.

The US football association (or USFA) was one of the first to join FIFA and as such, the United States team participated in the early World Cups, although the game was beginning to become outshined by baseball or basketball.

With American football also on the rise, the organization adopted a new name to avoid any confusion and called itself the US Soccer Football Association. However, the US soccer history would soon witness a new change in its governing body’s name in 1974, when the USSFA dropped Football from its tag and instead adopted the title of United States Soccer Federation, which is still used today.

So many will wonder, if the history of soccer in US starts out so early, how come soccer is not the main sport in USA? Well the truth is that the rather modest performances from the men’s national side early on in the 20th century, combined with the high rise of baseball, basketball, football and hockey, meant that the nation soon lost interest in soccer and since American kids had so many alternatives, soccer slowly went out of fashion.

However, with the increasingly good performances from the US men’s soccer team and the huge success of the women’s soccer team (who managed to bring in the first trophies in the history of soccer in US and is still one of the world powers in the game today), soccer is climbing back to its rightful place and with more and more American kids favoring it in school as a start-up sport, things look bright for the future of US soccer.

Car Loan Deals

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

When it comes to getting the best car loan deals then a lot of it will depend on your credit history. If you have a good credit past then this will go in your favour when it comes to getting the best rate of interest. However, all is not lost if you have had problems with credit in the past, although you still can get credit when it comes to getting a loan for a car you wont get the best interest rates, but by shopping around you can get a good car loan deal.

If you have an excellent credit rating then it might be in your best interest to go for a personal loan, by going for a personal loan you are able to shop around online and secure the cheapest loan and rate of interest. It also works another way in your best interests because as you already have the cash in your pocket by going for a personal loan you can go along to the dealer and offer cash.

The majority of time if you pay cash for your car then you can get extras; the dealer could knock something off the price you pay if you pay cash there and then or offer you bonuses such as money off your insurance. Another benefit is that you will drive away from the showroom knowing that the dealer isn’t in a position to repossess the car should you miss a repayment.

One possibility when it comes to financing your car is to take the finance through the dealer where you choose to buy your car from. However the majority of times the rate of interest will be a lot higher than if you had shopped around for a personal loan, one of the biggest benefits of taking this type of finance is that it is easier to get but you of course will pay for this privilege.

If you do have bad credit history and have been turned down time and time again for credit, then it still might be possible for you to get a loan to buy a car. If you look online then there many places which now offer loans to those with bad credit ratings, however by doing so you can expect of course to have to pay a high rate of interest on the loan.

Whichever way you decide to go for your car loan deal the best place to start is to go online, the internet holds a vast amount of information about the different types of car loan deals that are available and also the best rates of interest or best offers at car dealerships.

PSP Game: Online PSP Game Membership versus Buying a Game in a Store

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

What do you think would be the best value for money, the best deal?

Have your really compared all the ways of purchasing PSP Game, Full length Movies even Music, TV shows, Game demos for your PSP.

There is a bit on a tendency to race down to the nearest Games Shop to find the latest and best Games out there but, are you getting your moneys worth?

Have you ever thought of and done any comparing to other methods?

Have you ever thought that an Online Internet PSP Store could offer exactly the same quality and quantity of Games plus so much more for minimal cost?

Let’s take a quick look at the advantages and disadvantages of doing two methods of obtaining that new game you want so bad.

Buying Games in a Games Store Versus

Buying a Membership with an Internet PSP Download Store

Advantages Buying in a Game Store

? Usually first with the latest game
? Nothing like browsing and reading the back and checking out the graphics.
? Gaining extras like a poster, t shirt, competition entry etc
? Discussing the game with so called experts (sales assistants) who you would only assume have flogged the latest to give their critique on the game.
? Potential to buy second hand games that are no longer available.
? The thrill of handing money over the counter!

Disadvantages buying in a Game Store

? Paying in excess of $60+ for the latest game
? Buying more then ONE game at a time will get really expensive.
? If you don’t like the game it collects dust on the shelf (some places will give you 3 days to exchange it though).
? Shops don’t stock all the games that are on the market, you may have to wait weeks to get it once you have ordered it in. (If it is still available of course!)
? Shops can get crowded with over zealous gamers, especially if latest game is out on shelves.
? Shops Close at night!
? Getting only a DVD and that’s it, nothing else.
? Having to buy the latest magazines for reviews and checking the Internet for possible reviews.
? An old Game is no longer available.

Advantages buying from an Internet Download Store

? One time fee nothing over $40US and that’s it no more to pay for life.
? Having the ability to download anything at anytime any hour your want regardless 24/7
? Over 20 000000 items to download (including music and movies, cheat codes etc)
? No dust collecting DVDs
? On going support & tech support, manuals galore!
? You can Store all Games Music, Movies on your PC or your memory Stick
? Easy instructions to pop anything onto your PSP
? Competitions are available at times
? Easy access to Reviews on Games and Movies which is included in your membership (no downloading something you don’t want to play.)
? Extra items that can convert your old DVD’s (Games Movies) onto your PSP
? Read the Reviews on the Game download it; get a few Cheat codes and you’re on level 20 within a couple of hours!

Disadvantages Buying off an Internet Download Store

? You don’t own a computer!
? No CD/disc Cover to peruse and graphics to admire.
? No T shirt, poster promotions etc
? Buying a couple pieces of extra equipment (Requires Sony Memory Stick to play games, mind you the largest can hold up to 20 games)
? Not sure which Internet Download PSP sites are scams and rip offs!
? You only have dial up!
? An old Game is no longer available

Well after a little brain storming it really is up to the individual.

There is nothing like going into the store to grab the latest and best new Game on the market, but we all have to ask the question is this one CD/DVD worth the money.

My verdict is that I feel that since the younger generation tend to play the PSP Game more so then the older generation then the $ factor has to be taken into consideration. It’s a case of stating that “Yes the cover of the latest Game is “cool” with the promotional T shirt but, is it worth $45-90 bucks.

Especially when you know that you can get that game and a thousand other Games and items for half the price of that one DVD.

It all boils down to what is the most economical and what suits the individual. And what you are prepared to do to get the most out of your PSP.

Plus There is a tendency to not trust the Internet and assume that somewhere somehow you may get “ripped off”.

However there are respectable services available it’s just a matter of looking and researching and finding consistent reviews on whom and what is out there.

On that note there are a handful of respectable and legal Online PSP download centers that come highly recommended for quality quantity and value for money such as such as psp–game-.blogspot.com http://psp–game-.blogspot.com Enjoy.

Properly Formatting Articles - Article Submission!

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Do you submit articles online? Did you know that 90% or more of all articles submitted are wrongly formatted? Learn how to make it easier for editors world wide by following these simple-to-use steps on formatting your articles for submission online!

How Do I Know How To Format An Article Properly?

My company owns and operates 5 article directories that have over 10,000 articles listed online. I’ve seen every type of article submission there is. We typically get 100’s of submissions every single day!!!

Convinced? Let’s move on!

Before we can get into the steps to take for formatting articles, we need to learn about the different types of submissions you may come across.

1) Real Time Article Submission:
These types of directories simply offer an online contact form which you can copy & paste your article into. Most of these forms go to the editors/webmasters email account directly. If you don’t format your article properly, editors may simply delete the email since it may take them a lot longer to add your article to their site.

2) Author Login Article Submission:
These types of article directories require that you sign up as an author to get your own personal account. You then need to login and submit articles. These directories usually have all their article format requirements listed when you submit your articles. This process is where many fail to format their articles properly.

3) Text Only Article Submission:
Some Real Time directories and Author Login directories demand that you ONLY submit raw-text when submitting your article to them. In this case, they do not want HTML edited text, they just want the raw text in order to give them the ability to format your article by their own editor requirements. Below I will show you how to format a raw-text article the right way.

4) HTML Edited Article Submission:
Some, not many but some ezine article directories allow you to pre-format your article with simple HTML included within the article. Typically these directories are strict on what HTML code commands you can add within your articles. Below I will show you easy to use HTML that will not offend any editor’s world wide.

Now that we have gone through the types of ezine article directories out there that we may encounter, we can now break down how to format your articles for the above submission types.

======FORMAT #1======

1) Article Formatting - Text Only (Raw Text)

This type is the most commonly used for all article directories. The reason why editors want you to submit raw text only, is because when you submit HTML formatted articles, you may compromise the websites FONT properties, COLOUR co-ordination, and will probably make the destined directory look pretty gimmicky. Many webmasters spend a lot of time on the look & feel of their directory. By not adhering to their specifications, your articles might simply get deleted as fast as they are submitted.

Step 1) Always use Notepad (Windows) , or PlainText (Mac) for copying & pasting your articles to and from Word Document, etc. Ideally, you want to simply type your article right unto Notepad or PainText .

Notepad & PlainText are simple programs that don’t jumble up your article with dead code hiding in the background.

DO NOT USE MICROSOFT WORD…

Programs like Microsoft Word are THE WORST to copy & paste your articles from. This style of program always hides useless code in the background that only article directory editors will be able to see.

As an editor, if we see this garbage code generated from Microsoft Word, we will simply rip your article out of our system and copy it into Notepad . Once we do that, you will have lost any bolding, italics, active links that you may have wanted within your article.

DO NOT USE YOUR WEBSITE…

Just like Microsoft Word, when you copy & paste articles directly from your website, you will ultimately copy all the code along with it. This website code will result in deletion of your article right away or editing from an editor that you didn’t want happening.

HOW TO LOCATE NOTEPAD & USE IT EFFECTIVELY…

Click on: Start - All Programs - Accessories - Notepad

Once notepad is opened, you need to make sure that Word Wrap is NOT active. Without de-activating word wrap, your article might get submitted all broken up with major line breaks, and may end up looking like Mickey Mouse wrote it.

DE-ACTIVATE WORD WRAP …

In order to check to see whether or not word wrap is active, simply click on FORMAT up top. Make sure that Word Wrap does NOT have a checkmark beside it. If a checkmark is present, click on the checkmark to remove word wrap.

Now that notepad is ready for use, it’s time to copy & paste your article within it. You can copy & paste your article directly from either Microsoft Word or your website. You’ll notice that once you do, all the bold , italics , website links won’t be active. This is exactly what you want. Take a minute to go through and find areas where you had active links. You’ll need to add the actual website address were it’s needed. If you find it difficult to edit your article with word wrap off, simply re-activate it for the time being.

Once you’ve edited your article and fixed any improper line breaks, you’re now ready to start submitting your article. Simply remove word wrap from Notepad and copy & paste the information directly into the article submission form.

If you use Notepad(Windows) & PlainText(Mac) properly, there is no reason why editors may delete or edit your articles accordingly.

One last thing! Make sure to make use of proper paragraphs within your articles. There is nothing worst than viewing an article that never ends and looks like one massively long blob of text.

======FORMAT #2======

2) Article Formatting - HTML Ready (Simple code)

This step gets a little trickier. I will have to assume that you have some basic knowledge on using HTML!!!

Here are the top 4 HTML commands you typically can use:

1) Font properties (Bold,Italics,Underline)
2) Header Command (H1 / H2 / H3)
3) Bullets (Dotted / Numbered)
4) Active Web Links

Anything besides those are usually forbidden within most article submission websites that allow HTML to be used. Within your HTML editor, I suggest you prepare your article these commands only…

Do’s & Don’ts:

DO NOT - Use Microsoft FrontPage . This program is not good when trying to create simple code that will be acceptable throughout the submission process. Editors usually delete articles that have been edited by Microsoft FrontPage.

DO NOT - something … This is not necessary for websites other than your own.

DO NOT - … This style of command is real difficult to remove from within articles and usually take up a lot of extra time for the editor. Time they may not be willing to take.

DO NOT - … This is usually a NO NO for most sites simply because the website you’re submitting to might be using another type of font which does not match the one you submitted. Also, sometimes size does matter. I would refrain from using a font style & size all together.

DO NOT - Use any images at all. Images never stay active forever and affect speed time. I’ll bet that 99.9% of ezine article directories online do not allow image tags & commands within your article. Even if you need to show a graph or something similar to prove a point, it is usually not acceptable. You’ll need to find other ways and use text instead.

DO - Use p for paragraphs instead of span & class tags.

DO - Use either strong or b for bolding text.

DO - Use em for italics.

DO - Use u for underline text.

DO - Use ul to create a list of information with dots/numbers.

DO - Use H1 , H2 , H3 tags for larger headlines if it’s accepted.

DO - ahref= www.yoursite if permitted, for activating links.

That’s all you really want to use when preparing your articles with HTML commands. Anything more than those specified above usually are not accepted and may mean the difference between articles that get accepted by editors, or simply deleted by editors.

=== IN CONCLUSION ===

Make sure to pay special attention to ezine article directories Editor Guidelines and follow the guidelines. When formatting articles, use only NOTEPAD or PLAINTEXT for raw-text submissions and use only simply HTML tags for HTML accepted articles.

Some article directories may reward you if you closely follow their guidelines and only submit properly formatted articles to them. Just remember, 99% of article submissions are incorrect. As more and more authors start submitting articles, you’ll want to set yourself aside from the rest. Your articles will get approved quicker and the less chances you’ll have that some editor simply deletes your articles all together!

Driving tips in Greece

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Hiring a car and venturing into the Greek countryside is one of the best ways to see this country. Many tourists prefer this arrangement for its flexibility alone, aside from the thrill of seemingly driving backwards through the centuries when crossing from the metropolitan city centres into the rolling countryside and ancient ruins. However, it’s important to drive cautiously in Greece, as the road surface can be uneven at times and the hairpin turns can easily take you by surprise.

Seatbelts are required by law for all front seat passengers and children less than 10 years old need to be secured in a child safety seat in the front section. Traffic drives on the right side of the street, and talking on a mobile phone while driving isn’t allowed. The legal blood alcohol limit for all drivers in Greece is 0.5mg/ml.

Finally, cars need to be equipped with a standard emergency kit which includes a red warning triangle, a first-aid pack and a fire extinguisher. The roadside assistance hotline can be reached by dialling 104, and accidents should be reported to police by calling 100.

Athens is Greece’s most congested city, with rush hour traffic nearly unbearable. As a result, there’s a system in force that only permits locals to alternate driving every other day according to their license plates (odds on one day and evens on another).

Tourists are exempted from this stipulation, as are hired vehicles and those with foreign plates which are permitted to drive any day of the week. Don’t be surprised to find complete city blocks of downtown Athens barricaded off during periods of exceptional congestion.

Parking is clearly marked with signposts that read in both English and Greek. Yellow dotted lines indicate an area where stopping and idling is forbidden; otherwise, most public parking zones are by permit only. Generally, you can buy a permit from a booth nearby.

Once you’ve had enough of Athens, you’ll most likely head out into the surrounding countryside. All of the inter-city roads are three-lane toll ways that levy a very light tax for their use.

Heading out of Athens, travel time to Patras is 2 hours (130 miles) and to Salonica 5 hours (300 miles). Filling up the gas tank is no trouble at all. These days, most pumps are equipped with credit card readers that allow for 24-hour service. However, it’s not a bad idea to carry around a little cash when you’re driving in more remote areas, just in case the refuel stations don’t accept credit cards.

As long as you aren’t ashamed to exercise a little caution, your time in Greece should be rewarding. Watch out for livestock on the road when driving across country; and on the other side of the spectrum, expect to spend significant time locked up in traffic at the urban centres. Whenever possible, plan your driving time around morning and evening rush hours. In no time at all, you’ll see why so many visitors choose to be their own tour guide in this unique place.

Audio Book and the Future of Libraries

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Imagine a time when you could get any audio book you want to read from the library without having to physically visit the library to lend the audio books.

Well, imagine no more because it is now possible.

Public libraries from New York City to Alameda, California are now leading the packs of libraries that have begun allowing members to download audio books which they can listen to on their Personal Computers or portal audio book players such as PDAs — all from the comfort of their homes or offices.

>From Tom Clancy’s techno-thrillers, Arabic, Spanish, French tutorials to as many titles as possible, librarians can now enjoy the best of audio books without having to leave their homes or offices.

What better way for libraries to stay needed and relevant in the new digital age than this?

With the Internet, many people are beginning to lose interest in the libraries, but this move will help the libraries to retain their memberships.

When asked what prompted this development, Barbara Nichols Randal, the director of the Guilderland Public Library in suburban Albany, explained that they took the needs of their younger readers and other people that were too busy to visit the library into consideration before coming up with this move.

Specifically, she said, This is a way for us to have library access 24/7 .

For example, the Madison Public Library has access to a subscription database of audio book content. It provides this service for people who want to access this information from the comfort of their homes or offices, without having to physically visit the library.

The name of this subscription database of audio book content is OverDrive.

Anyone that has a LINK library card and access to the Internet can benefit from using OverDrive.

Note that while some of the libraries allow you to download and even copy their audio books into your PC and/or other portable CD or MP3 players, others don’t.

With those that do not allow downloading or burning of their audio books, you will only be able to read them on your computer… while being connected to the Internet.

Whichever service or library you prefer, the point is that you can benefit from the audio book without leaving the comfort of your home or office.

Take the time to search for the particular library that you prefer and register with them. Some of them offer free registration for particular periods of time, while others charge a token fee to access their database of audio books.

Scrubs (Season 1) DVD Review

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Nominated for 9 Emmys and 2 Golden Globes, Scrubs premiered in Fall 2001 to moderate fanfare and a respectable Nielsen rating of #34. And although the series has yet to achieve blockbuster ratings, it has managed to build a loyal fan base devoted to its unique brand of humor and quirky characters. Created by Bill Lawrence (creator of Spin City), Scrubs is a spoof on the dearth of hospital dramas that have cropped up since ER popularized the genre. In a sense, it’s what Grey’s Anatomy would be like if Ben Stiller were the lead character.

Filmed in a real life hospital (North Hollywood Medical Center), Scrubs follows the bungling day-to-day experiences of medical intern Dr. John “J.D.” Dorian (Zach Braff). Along with his college buddy Dr. Christopher Turk (Donald Faison), the two newcomers must learn the ropes of daily life in an actual hospital setting. But Sacred Heart, their new stomping ground, is the epitome of a dysfunctional work environment. One might easily believe that everyone’s job is to dump on J.D. In getting his feet wet, the young intern butts heads with numerous characters such as fellow intern and potential love interest Dr. Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke), cranky Chief of Medicine Dr. Bob Kelso (Ken Jenkins), the ever-abrasive Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley), pessimistic nurse Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes), and a sarcastic janitor (Neil Flynn).

Scrubs is a character-driven show that’s exceptionally well-written, and the acting is superb. John C. McGinley is fantastic in the role of Dr. Cox, a performance almost as memorable as his portrayal of consultant Bob Slydell in Office Space. His delivery is almost as perfect as that of Ken Jenkins who often resembles Lloyd Bridges from Airplane with his uncanny ability to deliver ridiculous one-liners with a straight face. Veteran talents Sarah Chalke (Becky from Roseanne) and Donald Faison (Murray from Clueless) round out an excellent supporting cast for Zach Braff who makes his mark with this very likeable character. In the end, Scrubs is a situation comedy built on the strength of biting sarcasm and clever humor. And although it’s already enjoyed a successful five-year run, it’s probably one of the most underappreciated comedies on network TV. If you haven’t yet seen it, do yourself a favor and check it out. You won’t be disappointed.

Wedding Speeches - Ten Top Tips on What to Say or Do

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

1. It goes without saying that you should mention the bride and groom in the wedding speech. It means doing your homework and finding out something about their foibles or hobbies.

2. So if the bride collects shoes for instance you might wonder how the groom is going to afford to keep her shod. If the groom is a keen sportsman you might say something about that it’s now time he took up Do-it-yourself instead.

3. It’s gracious to thank the hosts for their wonderful hospitality.

4. It’s appropriate to say something witty and wise about marriage itself and what it means. You might use an old saying or a piece from a poem or a bit from the Gospels.

5. It’s nice to mention the parents of the wedding couple in some way. So if the groom’s father is an avid golfer, for instance, you might laughingly compliment him on actually taking the day off for his daughter’s wedding. If the bride’s mother is a wonderful cook then you might say how lucky the groom is to be marrying into a family who will feed him well.

6. If you are speaking as a bride or groom it would be nice to mention your parents and how much they have done for you during your growing years. You could say that you hope to build your marriage on their happy relationship.

7. The groom, of course, should mention how much he loves his new wife and how beautiful she is looking on this special day. The bride, if she is speaking, should mention her happiness at being married to such a wonderful man and how much she loves him.

8. The groom should toast the bridesmaids while the best man should respond to the toast saying how lucky he is to be surrounded by such lovely ladies!

9. It’s gracious to say something about the wedding service itself and how much it meant. If there are clergy present it is nice to thank them for the trouble they took to make it meaningful.

A wedding day is a day for being upbeat and positive and never mentioning anything that would upset the mood of the day. It’s definitely a day when you say all the right things about people so if a father who has been absent for years turns up you might mention that his son has inherited his lovely singing voice or good looks but never speak about his unfaithfulness.

10. A wedding speech should mention those who cannot be present due to circumstances or ill health. So if gran is too old to come it would be nice to speak kindly of her saying how much she is missed. Above all it should make all those who are there happy that they are sharing in the wonderful occasion.

Boston Schools Benefit From The Readboston Program

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Literacy is a problem across the nation; and with the influx of many poorly educated immigrants, the problem is only getting worse. The city of Boston has done something about it, and partners with the Boston schools for one phase of its implementation.

In 1995, Mayor Thomas M. Menino founded the ReadBoston project to address the low literacy levels of the city’s youth. The project’s goal is to have all children in Boston schools reading on grade level by the completion of third grade.

ReadBoston targets children both before they enter Boston schools kindergarten and throughout elementary school. After school programs and summer activities extend the campaign to ensure Boston’s youth can read.

Preschool Years

Before entering the Boston schools, ReadBoston partners with childcare centers, providing materials and training to help the centers establish and encourage home reading programs for the children who attend the centers. They also work with daycare teachers to improve their literacy teaching skills.

ReadBoston has two main programs under the early years literacy campaign - Early Literacy Links and The Reading Trail.

Early Literacy Links reinforces ReadBoston’s focus on the importance of early literacy by promoting more effective reading instruction through teacher training. Three literacy specialists and one resource librarian focus their efforts in a small number of childcare centers to help train teachers and daycare providers. Their focus is how to best prepare young children to become able readers.

The Reading Trail promotes family involvement in the literacy development of their children. Home lending libraries are established and maintained in childcare centers across the city to encourage children to read, to have a family member read to them, to visit the library, and to use individual “trail guides” to record the books they read. As the children reach milestones along the “trail”, they are given books and other reading incentives. Additionally, centers participating in The Reading Trail receive books to establish libraries and training on how to integrate family reading activities into their current curriculum.

Boston Schools

Once children reach the elementary level within the Boston schools, ReadBoston is there to welcome them and assist the Boston schools to foster literacy home-school connections.

Within the Boston schools, ReadBoston breaks into four separate yet cohesive programs - the Family Literacy Project, Reading Is Fundamental, the After-School Project, and the Families And Books program.

Family Literacy Project:

?Encourages family involvement in children’s literacy;
?Sets up home lending libraries and provide the books in Boston schools elementary classrooms to take books home to read with their families;
?Promotes twice yearly parent-teacher conferences with an emphasis on literacy; and
?Provides teacher training and support to help each of the Boston schools incorporate the program into their existing curriculum.

There are currently 21 elementary level Boston schools participating in the ReadBoston program. They hope to eventually expand to every elementary school in the city.

Reading Is Fundamental (RIF):

?Provides three free books each year to participating students to create a home library of their own; and
?Develops fun activities to encourage reading as a worthy pastime for the children.

Each year ReadBoston gives three books to over 15,000 students within the Boston schools through the RIF program.

The After-School Project integrates literacy into the Boston schools’ after-school programs. Literacy specialists promote literacy instruction by providing literacy training, advice and books to increase literacy instruction and reading within the after-school arena.

Families And Books reach children during the off-school summer months, using two Storymobiles that visit 40 neighborhood sites each week during July and August. Each Storymobile provide fun storytellings for children, who also can take books to read at home. The two Storymobiles together carry over 10,000 books that may be checked out by the children.

In addition to the involvement of the Boston schools, a wide array of community members have joined the ReadBoston campaign - foundations, corporations, community groups, and individuals. They provide both funding and volunteerism. The community-sponsored book drives have garnered over 500,000 new books for the ReadBoston program, and over 1,700 tutors volunteer each week to help children learn to read - working in the childcare centers, the Boston schools classrooms, and the after-school programs. Boston and its community are serious about literacy for the city’s children.

Can I Get A Warranty On A Second Hand Car?

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Just because you buy a car second hand it doesn’t mean that you don’t have rights. However, what rights you have will all depend on where you purchase the car from.

Knowing what your rights are and what you can do about them can be a problem when it comes to second hand vehicles because the vehicle could have hidden faults or the conditions defined in order for the vehicle to meet satisfactory conditions is lower.

When buying a second hand car from a dealer, many will give you the option to pay for an extended warranty over the standard one year guarantee or something similar such as mechanic breakdown cover. However, while you are paying for peace of mind, it does come at a price.

The most important thing to remember if you do have a problem with a second hand car is to act as soon as the problem is discovered. This is because the outcome depends on the condition the vehicle was sold in and if you had the vehicle some time it could affect your claim.

If you bought the car from a dealer then the car must be fit for the purpose it is sold, in satisfactory condition and must meet the description which was given. Any defects must have been pointed out to the buyer by the dealer before the sale was made. If you have problems then it could be helpful to have the car evaluated by a professional.

If the car was bought at an auction then you might not have any rights under consumer law. If you have problems with a car purchased this way, then seek professional advice from the Citizens Advice.

If you buy the car from a private seller then you do have rights but less than had you bought the car from a dealer. However the vehicle has to be as described, has to have the correct documentation and has to be roadworthy.
