Which is the Right Religion?

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Observation shows that human creative activity has a physical, a social and a spiritual aspect. (By human creative activity I mean useful and constructive activity by human beings). The physical aspect of our creative activity concerns our activity in relation to the physical universe. The social aspect relates mainly to human behaviour and interaction amongst humans. The spiritual aspect of our creative activity primarily concerns our activity in relation to God. Over time, mankind has acquired considerable knowledge of the physical universe. This knowledge has been classified as the physical and natural sciences. Knowledge we have acquired of human behaviour and interaction amongst humans has been classified as social science.

But this has not been the case with knowledge we have of the spiritual aspect of life. Such knowledge has not been classified as spiritual science. This is so because much of what at present constitute spiritual facts and beliefs cannot be considered as science. A lot of such facts are not backed by proof and many of the beliefs are not founded on reason. Unverifiable conjectures about phenomena and existence beyond this life are professed as truths. The situation at present is such that spiritual works available to us contain fiction, misconceptions, superstition and falsehood in addition to actual facts. I will use some examples from the Christian teaching and Holy Bible to illustrate this point.

Consider the Bible account of the creation of Man and his fall from grace, (the Bible, Genesis 2:7-24 3:1-24).

We are told that God created Adam and Eve and established them in the Garden of Eden where He had made adequate provisions for their needs. All went well until the serpent came along and deceived them into disobeying God. The act of disobedience in the Garden of Eden caused Adam and Eve to lose favour with God. Christians believe that the sinfulness of Adam and Eve subsequently passed on to all generations of mankind. That, in their thinking, is responsible for mankind’s fall from grace and the human proneness to commit sin. The Christian concept of original sin which is that sinfulness is a part of mankind’s nature is founded on this Bible story.

Now let us examine this Bible account rationally. It has been scientifically established that mankind has inhabited the earth for over a million years. The coming into existence of the human being is, therefore, a primeval event that is prehistoric and immemorial. Surely, any account of this event cannot be anything but an invention.

Moreover, the incidents related in this Bible story are inconsistent with natural phenomena. God does not talk. Snakes do not have the faculty of speech. Knowledge is not gained by eating the fruit of a tree, neither is it possible to attain everlasting life in this way. This tale, by all indications, is only a Jewish fable. It is not a true account of real events. However, Christianity accepts it as a factual historical event and has built its all-important concept of original sin on it. Clearly, this is a case of fiction being passed for fact.

Let us go on to consider the concepts of heaven and hell as propagated by the Christian faith. Heaven, we are told, is the home of God where people who do God’s will on earth will spend eternity with Him in bliss. Hell, on the other hand, is the place of punishment where those who lived sinful lives will suffer everlasting torment after death.

Now let us think seriously about these issues. God does not have physical substance, God is spirit. Because spirit has no physical limitations, God is everywhere at all times. In other words, God has infinite presence. Since God is infinite in expanse, so to speak, it does not make sense to say that God has a particular place of residence. The concept of home is a physical concept which has no application in the spiritual realm. Reason clearly shows that heaven, in actual fact, does not exist.

And to the question of hell. Forgiveness is a cardinal moral principle of the Christian faith. Jesus Christ in his teachings stated unequivocally that we should always forgive others no matter how many times they offend us. If one desires to commune with God, one must have a forgiving heart, he taught. How then can we think of God as being so unforgiving as to establish a place of everlasting torment for those who go against His will. The very idea of hell implies that God is wicked and unchristian. It is, without doubt, a misconception to associate God who is infinitely good with such a cruel idea. In reality, heaven and hell are misconceptions that have passed for spiritual facts.

Let us now consider superstition in the Bible. The gospel tells us about a father who brought his epileptic son to Jesus Christ for healing, (Luke 9:37-43). The account says that Jesus rebuked the demon in the boy. It came out of him and the boy was instantly cured.

Let us examine this report in the light of our knowledge of medical science. Epilepsy is a nervous disease and we know from medical science that demons are not responsible for illness. There is actually no proof that evil spirits exist. The belief in their existence and that they are responsible for ailments is irrational. Such belief amounts to superstition.

And now to the matter of falsehood in the Bible. We shall examine the Bible account of the conception of Jesus Christ by the Holy Ghost and the reports of his resurrection and ascension.

Knowledge is usually brought to mankind through people of high intelligence. In some cases such people are gifted with extra-ordinary mental or creative abilities. People like this, referred to as men of genius, very often take us to new levels in knowledge of the universe. One such person was the mathematical genius, Albert Einstein, who brought us exciting new knowledge of the physical universe. Jesus Christ belonged to this class of people. He was a luminary who made revolutionary contributions to spiritual knowledge.

Unfortunately, the Jewish educated class of his time did not understand or accept him. That probably explains why he chose his disciples from amongst the uneducated, fishermen and the like. These followers, who obviously were not men of high intelligence, did not recognize him for what he was which was simply a man of extra-ordinary mental abilities and learning. His remarkable accomplishments were, rather, what made profound impressions on them.

It is reported that he healed all manner of sickness, raised the dead, and fed thousands of people with few loaves and pieces of fish. We are told that he walked on water, waves became still at his command and a fig tree that he cursed withered. They (his followers) were awed by these incidents and began to perceive him as a deity. Jesus Christ noticed this idolization and at the end of one of his sermons said to his followers and the crowd present, (Luke 6: 46-49).

Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord’ and not do what I tell you? Every one who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like, he is like a man building a house, who dug deep, and laid the foundation upon rock and when the flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it has been well built. But he who hears and does not do them is ike a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great .

Jesus Christ was clearly not happy that he was being idolized while little attention was paid to his message. He was just a genius who had used his extra-ordinary talent to gain profound spiritual knowledge. His primary concern was to impart this knowledge to others. His desire was for people to listen, learn and practice what he was teaching them.

After his death, however, his followers who did not fully understand him or his work declared him deity. To lend credence to this claim, they presented us with the story of his conception by the Holy Ghost and the tales of his resurrection and ascension.

Let us now subject these things to logical reasoning. Spirit does not have physical substance. A thing that does not have physical substance cannot be divided, reproduced, split or apportioned into two or more separate and different units. Spirit, therefore, cannot exist in the form of separate and individual entities. This means that you cannot have one spirit called, say, Michael, separate and different from another spirit called, say, Gabriel, separate and different from another one called, say, Satan, etc. Existence in this form is a physical phenomenon that does not occur in the spiritual realm. It logically follows that there can be only one spirit in existence. That spirit is God. Clearly, no Holy Ghost exists and Mary the mother of Jesus was not made pregnant by any such spirit
.
Let me add at this point that the human being does not have a spirit or soul. Our mind, which creates the illusion of a spirit in our body, is actually a mechanism of the brain by which we perceive and experience spiritual as well as physical phenomena.

Logical reasoning has shown that there can be only one spirit in existence and also that heaven does not exist. Going by these conclusions, the tales of the resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ do not make sense. If there can be only one spirit in existence, what then did Jesus Christ become after he resurrected? If heaven does not exist, where then did he ascend to? The claims of a resurrection and an ascension are inconsistent with logically established spiritual realities.

The Bible account of the conception of Jesus Christ by the Holy Ghost and the reports of his resurrection and ascension are definitely falsehood.

The occurrence of untruths, conjectures and fallacies in current spiritual teachings is not peculiar to the Christian faith. I have found a high incidence of this flaw in other spiritual works and teachings that I have come in contact with. I am, however, hopeful that my spiritual works will help clarify matters and also enable mankind to gain full spiritual enlightenment.

My spiritual knowledge was obtained by study and experimentation with spiritual facts and principles, by observation of spiritual phenomena, and by logical reasoning. It qualifies for classification as science. The knowledge I bring I therefore present as a branch of learning I have called Spiritual Science. The aim and scope of Spiritual Science are to provide such spiritual knowledge of existence as will enable mankind gain complete happiness and success in life.

God has endowed me with extra-ordinary mental abilities. It is by His grace that I have gained full spiritual knowledge of existence. I recognize my moral obligation to share this knowledge with others and help others gain full spiritual enlightenment. I have a duty to work for the spiritual enlightentment of mankind. It is my fervent hope that you will maintain an open mind and try to comprehend the spiritual knowledge which I bring to you. Being fully enlightened spiritually will enable you to live your life the right way. When you live the right way you will undoubtedly find complete joy and success in life. May the grace of the Almighty God be with you always.

Lead A Debt Free Student Life, Obtain Debt Consolidation Loans

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

A prompt and timely repayment always keeps you away from falling into a debt trap. But at the time of financial crisis it becomes quite difficult to make all repayments viable especially if you have taken several debts. To overcome this situation a debt consolidation loan would be the best answer for you.

Too many debts always create a problem with your repayments. Debt consolidation loans help you to repay all your existing debts by consolidating them into one. To be more clear, consider this example. Suppose if you have 3 existing debts. Now when you take a debt consolidation loan, you will make repayment for only this loan. All your previous debts will be merged together and will be repaid automatically by the debt consolidation lender. This will help reduce the size of your repayment and you will be bound with only one creditor.

Student debt consolidation loans also offer several benefits. They come with a very low rate of interest and are charged only after you have completed your school and college. There are plenty of rebates also available that you can avail with student debt consolidation loans, Apart from that if you go for this loan, your debt pressure will decrease a lot and you will be able to concentrate on your studies and work.

You will get a student debt consolidation loan mainly from two sources:

? A government agency- These are federal loans offered usually with cheaper interest rate than other sources.

? A federal agency- also known as private student debt consolidation, offer loan to all students who fail to get a government fund.

Student debt consolidation loans are offered to all types of students. As a student, this might be your first loan that you need to repay your tuition fee, boarding fee, travel expense etc. So, you will be offered with a no credit history loan. You will get a student debt consolidation loan also if you have a bad credit history.

The process of student debt consolidation application is as simple as filling any other form. The most ideal and affordable source of application is the internet to which every student is familiar. Internet provides a range of lenders offering student debt consolidation loans. The application form will ask you for certain details about your identity and credit history. Being a student your loan application will be approved quickly without any delay.

But before filling out any form, first research and find the lender offering best loan amount with the lowest interest rates and easy repayments. This way you will get the best deal that will make your financial status good.

Are Pop-Ups Going Dinosaur Way?

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Is it the end of the road for pop-ups?

So far you have seen how to attract the potential customers to your site. You must also learn to keep them interested and not turn them away after giving them useful information and quality products. Do you know that happens? Yes, when you use pop-ups, visitors are annoyed, distracted and will not take your offering seriously. Therefore get rid of any pop-ups on your site.

Yes, there was period in internet history when pop-ups were the in thing . They have lost their popularity for some time now. Internet visitors are no longer enthused about pop-up ads. They think of them as unnecessary irritants to their otherwise pleasurable browsing.

Imagine watching your favorite thriller on the TV and a commercial pops up suddently. How do you feel? Your customer feels the same when you use pop-ups. Your visitors come to your site for quality information and any thing that stops them from getting it, even for a few seconds, is definitely a no no.

Yes, pop-ups were interesting once, no longer. Continuous use of spam filters and pop-up blockers made Internet users terribly annoyed. Now a days, no one wants to waste his /her quality time on looking at pop-ups. The users are more intelligent and go away to better sites that offer pure undistracting information. One sure way of losing a good prospective customer is to continue to employ pop-ups.

The content on your web site stays in the minds of your visitors longer than any gimmick like pop-ups. Suppose a salesperson comes to you for selling an item. He talks about every thing under the sun except his product. What is your reaction? Forget buying from him, would be interested in listening to him at all? The same logic applies to your web site as well. Be to the point, provide good quality information to keep your visitors interested in your website and your products.

Use high quality content and good products for making that lasting impression on your customers. Don’t use fake logic, hyperbole and stuff like that. Remember that visitors are interested in genuine products and quality content. Period.

Don’t try to advertise your way to success.

Let your pop-ups go the dinosaur way.

Possibility of Folic Acid Toxicity

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

The importance of folic acid to the synthesis of DNA and RNA is very great. For that reason concern over possible folic acid toxicity takes a back seat to the very real concerns over its deficiency.

Mild symptoms occur at levels over 15,000 mcg of folic acid intake. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for adults is 400 mcg per day, for pregnant women it is between 600 and 800 mcg per day and for lactating women it is 500 mcg per day. An upper limit of 1000 mcg per day has been established for supplements. It is considered to be of little benefit above that daily intake level.

Stomach, sleep and skin problems may occur at level of over 1000 mcg per day and seizures can rarely occur. For the most part folic acid toxicity is very infrequent since folates or vitamin B9 is water soluble. As such most excessive dosages are simply excreted in the urine.

The primary concern over excessive amounts of folic acid intake is that it can cause absorption problems when combined with certain prescription medications.

An anticancer drug used for chemotherapy called methotrexate is known to be less absorbed by patients taking excessive dosages of folic acid. Zinc and estrogen are also likely to combine with excess folic acid and becomes less easily absorbed. It is believed that excessive amounts of folic acid–more than 5000 mcg per day–may mask the symptoms of pernicious anemia. This is a disease in which absorption of vitamin B12 is inhibited.

Add to the list possible absorption problems with anticonvulsant drugs and barbiturates and it becomes ill advised to consider mega-dosing folic acid.

Still, finding that delicate balance between necessary levels of folates and excessive amounts is imperative for human health.

In 1998 folic acid enrichment of all grain products became mandatory in the United States because of the overwhelming evidence that folic acid prevents neuro tube defects (NTD) at least some of the time. NTD are profound birth defects causing spina bifida (opening in the spine), anencephaly (missing part of the brain), as well as cleft palate. Additionally, some limb problems and heart defects could be caused by deficiencies of folic acid.

Since 1998 one study has found at least a 19% decrease in the incidence of NTD’s. Since the enrichment of grain has only increased the average person’s folic acid intake by about 100 mcg per day it is possible that people still need to further supplement their diets.

Some factors may diminish a person’s ability to absorb folates in foods and alcoholism appears to be among them. There is also an important problem with the bioavailability of folates in some foods. One notable food where bioavailability is concerned, is corn. Although corn contains folates they do not occur in a form which is easily absorbed by humans. Certain processing–for instance that involved in the production of corn tortillas–increases corn mill folates’ bioavailability.

Dietary sources of folates include green leafy vegetables, chicken liver (1 cup supplies 1000 mcg), spinach and asparagus.

Easy Low Cost Finance Ensured on Opting for Secured Home Improvement Loan

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Taking a loan is easier these days when there is no dearth of lenders. It is the cost of the loan that counts a lot in well being of the borrower. Secured home improvement loan therefore is best suited for people who live on a limited budget and need to spare money for other expenses. Though one borrows secured home improvement loan mainly for renovation of home but the loan at the same time can be utilized for meeting various other expenses also.

Secured home improvement loan is given to borrowers on providing collateral to the lender. Any property like home, vehicle, jewelry, valuable papers etc serves well the function of collateral. Borrowers should note that greater loan and other terms-conditions including bargaining for reduced interest rate depend a lot on collateral. In case greater loan is the requirement, lenders seek high value collateral like home because generally it has higher equity in it which secures the loan more.

Lenders usually provide secured home improvement loan in the range of ?5000 to ?50000. They will go for evaluating equity in the collateral if greater loan is to be offered. The loan is given at lower interest rate because of its secured nature. With little efforts interest rate can be brought down. To do so first ask for the loan amount that is below the equity. If you boast of sound financial standing or a good income source, lenders will readily offer reduced interest rate. The loan is given for a convenient repayment period ranging from 5 to 30 years. The borrower thus can chose duration of paying back the loan as per his repaying capacity. If he needs to save money for other expenses, larger repayment term is preferred as outgo towards monthly installments is reduced.

Bad credit is no hurdle in getting secured home improvement loan as the loan is already well secured through collateral. So people who have faced CCJs or bankruptcy should apply for the loan without hesitation. However a good credit is always a plus point in taking loan at better terms. It would be wise if easy debts are paid and as a result some improvement is shown on credit score, before rushing to the lender.

In order to avail secured home improvement loan at low cost, the loan should preferably be applied online. This way numerous loan offers come your way and you can choose suitable package containing lowest possible interest rate.

Secured home improvement loan goes a long way in making you financial stronger as you complete necessary work at low cost. Make sure to pay off the loan in time to avoid incurring of debts.

Ten Ways To Help Children Through Divorce

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Going through a divorce is no fun for anyone, but children are especially vulnerable. Divorce specialist attorney Ed Sherman reveals in his book Divorce Solutions: How to Make Any Divorce Better, the following 10 things you can do to make a big difference in how well your children survive.

1. Tell children the truth in simple terms with simple explanations. Tell them where their other parent has gone.

2. Reassure them that they will continue to be taken care of and that they will be safe and secure.

3. Your children will see that parents can stop loving each other. Reassure them that a parent’s love for a child is a special kind that never stops.

4. Spend time with each child individually. Whether you have custody or visitation, the most important thing to the child is your individual relationship with him or her. Build the best relationship you can. The future is built of many tiny moments.

5. Children feel responsible for causing the divorce. Reassure them that they are not to blame. They may also feel that it is their responsibility to bring their parents back together. Let them know your decision is final and will have to be accepted.

6. Divorcing parents often feel guilty and become overindulgent. Give your child love, but also give limits.

7. Your child is still a child and can’t become the man of the house or a little mother. Continue to be the parent to your child. Seek other adults to fill your own need for companionship.

8. Avoid situations that place a child in the impossible position of choosing between parents:

* Don’t use your child as a way to get back at your spouse. Children can be terribly wounded this way.
* Don’t say bad things about the other parent in hearing of a child.
* Don’t say or do anything that might discourage the child from spending time with the other parent.
* Don’t encourage a child to take sides.

9. You and your former spouse will continue to be the parents of your children for life. Pledge to cooperate responsibly toward the growth and development of your children as an expression of your mutual love for them.

10. Be patient and understanding with your children. Be patient and understanding with yourself.

Even though it may be the last thing you feel like doing, cooperating with your spouse during your divorce is one of the best things you can do for your children. They learn that conflicts can be resolved eventually, which is a valuable lesson.

Martial Arts Book Review: Krav Maga by David Kahn

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Being the author of several books on the martial arts and fighting, I am always looking for books of exceptional quality to add to my library. If I have a book in my library, it’s definitely worth owning. One such book is David Kahn’s, Krav Maga.

After a brief introduction, David gives you a good basic overview of Krav Maga including some of its history. From here he goes right into a section on philosophy, which is very good, and one in which I would have to agree with about 90% of what he has to say.

The next section in the book gives a good overview on the proper mindset needed in order for you to prepare yourself for combat. Something a lot of books fail to do, but not this one. David also gives you a basic understanding of the vital/vulnerable points on the human body.

David’s next section is rather brief to my liking, but still a good overview on the basic principles involved in striking correctly for maximum effect. This section covers such strikes as; punches, palm heel strikes, elbow strikes, and eye gouges. There is also a small section on blocks and parrying as it is called in boxing.

The following section covers various lower body strikes and kicks along with kick defenses, which include deflections, blocks and grabs. This next section was particularly interesting in that it discussed close combat fighting and techniques essential to this section. Such as; falling, crawling, clinching, takedowns, defenses against tackles, etc.

The escape section was very enlightening as David covered the basic principles of escape from basic grabs, chokes while standing, chokes while lying down, head locks, hair grabs, and bear hugs.

Like most books that try to cover too much in one volume, I feel that the sections themselves although very well done, tend to be too brief on the proper execution of each individual technique. However, having said that, this is to be expected as the scope of this book is intended as a basic overview of the complete system, not a single volume devoted to one particular technique.

The only fault that I have with this book is the fact that I would have preferred actual photographs for demonstrating the techniques, rather than illustrations. I felt that a lot of what David was trying to explain got lost with the use of illustrations compared to if he would have used actual photographs.

The book continues with a brief section on basic strategies, which I found to be very solid. It then finishes with a basic training section which covers stretching, training programs, a 12 week training routine, and sparring.

Overall, this is a very good basic overview on the art of Krav Maga, and one you definitely want to acquire, especially if you decide to join a Krav Maga class. And that is not a bad idea at all. For more information on Krav Maga visit the David’s web site at: www.hammerheadops.com http://www.hammerheadops.com

Gym Goes Online

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

The traditional view of gym class is changing all over the United States. While most of us remember the endless games of kick ball and calisthenics, students at all grade levels are having a very different experience in elementary schools, middle schools and high schools across the country. The traditional gym class is shifting from team sports and group oriented activities to more independent and individual activities to keep kids active all year round.

Reasons Behind the Change

Two factors most influence the change in the traditional gym class. On the one hand, the increasingly competitive standardized testing is taking class time away from physical education. Many schools recognize that the way to bolster test scores is to devote more time to core subjects, like math and reading, and often gym class is the place with the most room to cut from busy school schedules. This trend is taking place in schools in all areas, including urban and suburban schools.

The second issue behind the shift from traditional gym class is the focus on the obesity rates of children in the United States. Educators agree that traditional formats, particularly combined with large class sizes, don’t give students the amount of exercise that they need to lead healthy lives. The average group oriented gym class usually only engages a child for a few minutes out of the average hour long gym class. Think about how much time a student stands around waiting for their turn in a game of kickball and you’ll see how much time the student actually participates in physical activity during a traditional gym class.

Independent Physical Activity

Unlike the team sports that have traditionally dominated physical education, today’s gym classes take advantage of the greater variety of individual activities that make the most use out of student exercise time. Activities like yoga, martial arts, bike riding, and jogging have come to the forefront in modern physical education where the new focus is on tailoring gym class to meet the needs of the students who take it and, hopefully, help them to develop lifelong habits of regular exercise.

While many students get embarrassed by their lack of coordination in team sports, there is a much greater variety of activities that students can participate in, taking the attention off of performing in a group and onto establishing strong personal exercise and fitness goals. By encouraging independent physical activities, physical education programs encourage more students to take responsibility for their personal fitness and feel better about themselves when they exercise.

Taking it Online

Many schools are taking the gym student completely out of the gym by making it an independent study class. In this way, students get credit for doing physical activities outside of school, such as taking a martial arts class or jogging a certain amount of time each day before school. Such programs take the pressure off of the student’s class schedule, allowing them to focus more on academic areas in school and enjoying physical activity outside of school. Student and physical education teachers track progress and work together to set goals without using valuable academic time in school. A Reason to Travel to Japan

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

When you think of Japan, what comes up to your mind? There might be “Sony” and “Toyota” or “Samurai” and “Geisha.” You might consider that the former ones represent the modern Japan and the later ones represent the past. However, the real Japan is not such simple and contains the both aspects together through its historical stream. It is little bit hard for people to understand that the two different characters exist in one country.

There are some clues to glance at the real face of Japan. As you know, Japanese cars are becoming more and more popular in the US. The reasons explain the typical quality of the Japanese products. Practicability and Flavor. The reliability is that people can count on and the quality is that owners can be satisfied with for a long time. How about Japanese food. Sushi is one of favorite healthy food these days. Thirty years ago almost nobody was willing to eat raw fish in the US, however, recently there are so many sushi restaurants around urban cities like Los Angeles. People eat sushi because it is not just a efficient diet menu but also an cultural experience. They recognize color scheme of sushi dishes. Red, green, black, yellow, and white on the plate. It is a kind of artistic presentation with natural ingredients.

Any basic daily activities of people, food and craft, gradually grows to be the level of culture after many years. Japan has been organized as a nation for about 1500 years and developed the living style to the cultural value. Even though Japan obtained a lot of influence from the US after the WWII, her original essence remained and still exist everywhere in the country. TOYOTA and SONY could not happened as world famous companies without the soul and cultural background. When you really want to feel and realize what it is, it’s time for you to get on an airplane to Japan. You will start connecting the depth of the culture and spirit of the mysterious country from the very first day.

U. S. May Become Nonaligned Nation; Cites Worldwide Ingratitude

Friday, May 30th, 2008

In case you haven’t heard, there is a brash new movement afoot to make America a nonaligned nation. The principal motivation behind the movement is worldwide ingratitude for the sacrifices America has made for the benefit of other nations, while getting back precious little in return, materially or even in simple gratitude.

Certainly, the group maintains, the payback in either form has hardly been commensurate with the sacrifices America has made in life and treasure. The members cite, for example, the summit of nonaligned nations in Cuba, where the attendees, who Jimmy Cagney might have called “you dirty, double-crossin’ rats,” delighted to blow Cuban cigar smoke at the U. S.

Raul Castro, the distinguished and penniless stand-in for his equally distinguished and penniless older brother, evoked the enthusiastic applause characteristic of a pent-up need for self-justification when he said that the world today is shaped by the United States’ irrational pretensions for world dominance…. When there no longer is a Cold War, the United States spends one billion dollars a year in weapons and soldiers and it squanders a similar amount in commercial publicity. To think that a social and economic order that has proven unsustainable could be maintained by force is simply an absurd idea.

Responding to the comment, a leader of the movement to make America a nonaligned nation, said, “OK, Raul, we heard you. So come on. Launch another boatload of refugees to bring us to our knees.”

The new movement, which traces its origins back to the will of the founding founders, who proclaimed that America should avoid permanent foreign entanglements, is preparing a new flag, much like the familiar Colonial rallying cry in cloth: Don’t Tread On Me. It is being sewn by a gifted seamstress in New England, named Victoria Albatross. The flag will highlight the sentiment of the movement, “Suckered In Never Again!”

The powers that divide Washington, stung by America’s series of military missteps abroad, have already begun to express private support for the innovative return of America to the sentiments of its founders and the entirely radical idea that its citizens actually may have a right to life, liberty, and [of all things] the pursuit of happiness, instead of the wearisome and thankless burdens of trying to conduct the world in its own image.

Even George Bush, caught in an off-handed moment as he returned from a bike ride in Crawford, Texas, said, “I’m usually not a fan of movements, unless it’s a movement to elect me or some other Republican, regardless of how big a jackass he is. But, given the extent to which I’ve been suckered in in Iraq, this movement has a lot of appeal.”

“Why, George?” his wife inquired, when he lightly poked her with his elbow.

“I’m glad you asked that, Laura,” he told her. Then, sounding every bit like a born-again American, he admitted, “I know my job is to protect Americans. I used to think that means kicking butt militarily. Now, I think it’s to kick butt economically, especially before Detroit goes completely out of business and China opens up factories in every nonaligned nation before we get around to it. So I’ve asked my speechwriters to help me make the transition. I want to tell every nation, ally or not, and especially the ingrates at that Fidel fest in Cuba, look here: you want us to help your nation do better, what are you willing to ante up? We accept two kinds of payment: money from the rich and loyalty from the poor.”

In an unusual sign of political amity, Ted Kennedy took off a moment from his usual disgruntled bluster over one ineffectual Democratic advocacy or another, and said, “As you know, I came from a wealthy family, so I’m aware that economic success comes with a lot of perks. Right now, we’re squandering our resources, while other countries are eating our lunch. Before it’s lights out in America, because we can’t pay the electric bill anymore, we need to concentrate on the only thing that can make the country successful enough to take care of its own poor, not to mention its potholes, and that’s worldwide economic leadership.”

Dick Cheney, interviewed at an undisclosed location while cleaning his quail gun, said, “I’ve been in Washington so long I almost forgot what it’s like to be a good businessman. This movement made me think, hey, I’m the kind of guy who can get this right, because what is really called for is the biz savvy to conduct America, Inc. Now that I caught on, I may even consider running for president in ‘08, providing, of course, my stent holds out.”

A well-know professor of geopolitics, Fred Fulbright, who is often tapped by the White House for disagreeable opinions, noted, “I’m glad the door to what has been the dismally dark room of official American political thought has at least opened a crack. People in Washington are beginning to see, even in the sliver of light that’s finally illuminating their vision, that most nations want economic success, even those cigar-huffing dissenters in Cuba - and economic success is just what America is equipped to help them enjoy. Forget military empire. We have nothing less than the opportunity to be history’s first economic empire. The prospects are, I think, inspiring.”

A variety of CEO’s have also stepped forward to endorse the movement. Steve Jobs stated, “It’s about time we started to operate this country on principles that are far more likely to win us a world of genuine allies and, yes, even some of that elusive sentiment called gratitude. What we’ve been doing is called taking your eye off the ball or not minding the store. I can tell you that nothing makes people more grateful than helping them have a chicken in every pot and an iPod in every ear.”

Arts groups, immediately going past the advantages of switching from being just another military empire to a uniquely successful economic empire, were more wary, with the head of The National Endowment, saying, “A country that concentrates on economic success has to ask itself a question. What does it want to see when it confronts its own soul - economic barbarism or cultural excellence? That’s my way of saying, as part of all the success, I could use a budget.”

The movement, encouraged by the widespread early show of support, hopes to ask for a national referendum on the issue, even though its members are confident Gallup, Pew, and Zogby will announce the results several times before the actual election confirms their projection.
